Three Essential Tips to Keep Your Body Running Strong
Supporting Runners Across Maidstone and Kent
Training for a marathon places repeated physical demands on muscles, joints, and connective tissue. Over time, this load can build up, especially during longer training blocks.
At Scott Osteopathic & Health Clinic, we regularly work with runners from Maidstone and across Kent. Many are preparing for spring and autumn marathons, half marathons, and other long-distance events. Based on this experience, our clinical team shares a few key principles to help runners train consistently, reduce injury risk, and recover well.
Recovery Is Part of Training
Many runners focus heavily on mileage and pace. However, recovery is just as important as the training itself.
Muscles adapt and strengthen during recovery, not only during running sessions. Without adequate recovery, tightness and fatigue can accumulate and affect performance.
From a clinical perspective, regular sports massage for runners may help to:
- Reduce muscle tightness
- Improve circulation
- Maintain tissue flexibility
- Highlight areas of overload before injury develops
As a result, runners who build recovery into their training plan often train more consistently and experience fewer interruptions.
Don’t Ignore the Small Niggles
During marathon training, tight calves, sore hips, and stiff hamstrings are common. Even so, these early warning signs should not be ignored.
As training volume increases, small niggles can quickly escalate once fatigue builds. Because of this, early assessment and treatment are often far more effective than waiting.
As Karen, our running coach and sports massage therapist, often reminds runners:
“Small problems are much easier to manage early than once they’ve changed how you move or train.”
Addressing issues early can help prevent longer periods away from running and support ongoing training progression through appropriate assessment and care.
Plan for Post-Marathon Recovery
Race day places significant stress on the body. Even when a marathon goes well, muscles and joints benefit from structured recovery support afterwards. For general guidance on recovery after endurance events, trusted advice is also available from Virgin Active.
For this reason, post-event recovery is an important part of the overall training process. Abigail, one of our sports massage therapists and a fourth-year osteopathy student, frequently works with runners after events. She often sees how early recovery care can help reduce stiffness and support a safe return to activity.
